Sarawak Fisheries and Aquaculture Profile Year 2005

Captured fisheries sector

The fisheries sector in 2005 produced 158,676.26 tonnes of fish decreasing in production by 14.74% compared to 2004 with the production 186,113.30 tonnes.

By sector, production from marine capture fisheries contributed 158,676.26 tonnes or 93.5% of the state fish production and aquaculture 10,384.21tonnes or 6.5%.


Aquaculture sector

The aquaculture sector has a large potential and can contribute significantly to the state total fish requirements. Emphasis will be given to improve the aquaculture output from small and medium scale farms by using modern technologies and practicing sustainable management policies through the participation of the private sectors.

Aquaculture production for the year 2005 continued to be influenced by the production of shrimp and fish from freshwater and brackishwater cages culture. The total aquaculture production in the state is 10,384.21 tonnes in 2005 and 11,494.87 in 2004 a dropped of 9.66%.

Shrimp culture

The total production of shrimp stood at 8,147 tonnes in 2005 dropped by 38.41 tonnes. In 2004, the production is 8,185.41. Shrimp contributed to about 78.4% of the overall fish production in the state. However in terms of value, this figure dropped from RM171,087,000 in 2004 to RM160,396,390 in 2005 decreasing by 6.24%

A total of 305 fish farmers/culturist were involved in the shrimp industry in 2005, decreasing slightly by 5.8% from 324 farmers in the year 2004. Overall there are about 2,182 shrimp ponds increasing by 50 ponds compared to 2004. There are about 1,163.98 ha ponds in 2005.


Siakap culture

Siakap is the dominant species in brackishwater either in cages or ponds. Other fish are grouper, milkfish and Trevelly. In 2005, there are 153 operators an increased of 5 operators in 2004. The total number of brackishwater cages is 1,495 unts occupying an area of 1.35ha.

The siakap production is estimated at 337.50 tonnes valued RM4,745,000.00


Crab culture

Crab culture is a small industry and there are only one company and one individual farmer involved in Sematan. The crab production in 2005 is 9 tonnes worth RM99,000.00


Freshwater aquaculture

Freshwater aquaculture contributed 18.2% of the total aquaculture production in 2005 with the production of 1,899.71 tonnes. The freshwater productions are from the ponds and cages.

In 2005, there are 4,111 cages an increased of 313 cages compared to 2004 which occupying 3.79 ha. Most of the cages are located at Btg. Ai lake, Sri Aman and Kpg. Paroh, Kuching. The estimated production is 950.11 tonnes worth RM 5,700,660 in 2005.

Freshwater pond culture spearheaded production from freshwater culture systems in 2004 with the total freshwater production of 2,220,542 tonnes but drastically declined to 949.60 tonnes in 2005.The major freshwater species cultured were Red Tilapia,Jelawat, Lee Koh, Lampan and Catfish.


Seed Production

In 2005, the private shrimp hatcheries producing 396,155,000 of PL to cater 305 shrimp farmers.

As for fish fry production, the Agriculture department hatcheries has produced 17,931,712 fish fry/prawn of various freshwater species, Siakap and Udang galah.


Captured Inland Fisheries

Inland Fisheries refers to the landing of fish from public water bodies i.e rivers, lakes, ex-mining and dams. However, there is no data reported on the landing of fish in the state
